Here are some simple and easy to follow driving tips that you can implement right away and start saving fuel today!
- Avoid hard acceleration from a standstill. Accelerate slowly and evenly up to the speed limit.
- Coast as much as possible and coast to slow down.
- Avoid speeding up and slowing down. Keep a good following distance between you and the vehicle ahead and maintain a steady speed at or below the speed limit.
- Follow the posted speed limit and avoid driving over 60 MPH on the highways and interstate. For every 5 MPH over 60 your fuel consumption goes up 20%. Use cruise control on the flat stretches of highway and use the highest gear possible or overdrive. Use the slow lane and let drivers pass!
- Remove roof racks if you do not use them often and remove all unnecessary weight from you vehicle. Also avoid driving around with a full tank of fuel because this adds weight as well.
- Avoid excessive idling. If you think your wait is going to be longer than 2 minutes, then shut off your engine while you wait it out. Avoid the drive thru if the line is long and avoid letting your car idle just to keep the A/C or heater running. Restarting your engine while your vehicle is warmed up uses less fuel than letting it idle. Also avoid idling your vehicle in the morning to let it warm up. Your vehicle will warm up faster and get better mileage if you start driving a few seconds after start up. Idling for 15 minutes can waste up to 1/4 gallon of fuel. Idling wastes 3.8 million gallons of fuel each day in the US!!
- When it is hot out use your A/C on low while on the highway or interstate with the windows up to reduce wind drag. When in town turn off the A/C and roll the windows down.
-When driving in hills or mountains allow your vehicle to coast down the backside of the inclines.
- Avoid driving during peak traffic times and heavily congested areas. Plan your trips ahead of time to consolidate errands and plan to drive the shortest and flattest route possible. When driving in unfamiliar areas use a GPS to avoid getting lost which can waste fuel.
- Keep track of your mileage and keep a mileage log. If you notice your mileage starting to drop off then it may be time for a tune up or some maintenance.
